Virtual reality-assisted surgical planning

Developed a patient-specific virtual reality (VR) model at IIT Madras, in collaboration with Prof R. Krishna Kumar and Dr K. R. Balakrishnan, to support preoperative planning for paediatric left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation at MGM Healthcare, Chennai.

The New Indian Express and The News Minute explicitly recognise my contribution to developing the VR model.

Patient-specific biomechanics for surgical planning

I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Glasgow, working with Sean McGinty in the James Watt School of Engineering and Nicholas Hill in the School of Mathematics & Statistics. My research develops computational models to support cardiovascular and neurosurgical planning, investigate immediate and long-term intervention outcomes, and improve implant design.

I study surgery-induced deformation, vascular adaptation, growth and remodelling, and the mechanical response of biological tissues. My current work combines coronary intervention research within the EPSRC Centre for Future PCI Planning with aortic modelling and knowledge-exchange projects with Terumo Aortic.

During my EPSRC- and Terumo Aortic-funded industrial PhD at the SofTMech Centre (2020–2024), I developed patient-specific computational tools for endovascular aortic repair, stent-graft deployment and device–vessel interaction, collaborating with Francesco Migliavacca and Giulia Luraghi at Politecnico di Milano.

Earlier work at IIT Madras combined fluid–structure interaction during craniotomy with a virtual reality platform for LVAD implantation planning and post-operative assessment, in collaboration with R. Krishnakumar and cardiothoracic surgeon K. R. Balakrishnan.

My long-term goal is to integrate patient-specific mechanical modelling with virtual and augmented reality to develop predictive surgical planning and navigation tools for cardiovascular and neurological interventions.

Research themes

CORONARY INTERVENTIONS

PCI & in-stent restenosis

Investigating how the mechanical environment following coronary stent deployment influences vascular adaptation and neo-intimal growth, using volumetric/kinematic growth models, homogenised constrained mixture theory, fluid–structure interaction and damage mechanics.

AORTIC ADAPTATION

Aortic growth & remodelling

Developing and validating multiscale models using longitudinal pre- and post-operative CT images from abdominal aortic aneurysm patients to understand adaptation following stent-graft implantation.

COMPUTATIONAL MECHANICS

Patient-specific device mechanics

Nonlinear finite-element modelling, XFEM and anisotropic hyperelastic material subroutines for stent-graft deployment, device–vessel interaction and dissection propagation.

CARDIOVASCULAR EMULATION

Surrogates & parameter inference

Co-authored research on deep Gaussian processes and multivariate Bayesian spline-based cardiovascular emulators, complemented by experience in material parameter estimation.

IMMERSIVE TECHNOLOGIES

Mixed reality for surgical planning

Virtual and augmented reality for surgical training, pre-surgical planning and intra-operative navigation, building on the LVAD planning platform developed at IIT Madras.

KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE

Clinical & industrial translation

Working with clinical collaborators and Terumo Aortic to validate computational frameworks and transfer them towards industrial R&D and, in the longer term, patient-specific treatment planning.

I am also interested in incorporating drug-eluting stents into biomechanical models to investigate relationships between local drug delivery, vascular mechanics and neo-intimal growth.
